Amar Das Ji spent roughly twelve years as a disciplined Sikh of Guru Angad Dev Ji before receiving Guruship. The long apprenticeship matters more than any single test.

The Sakhiਸਾਖੀसाखी
From about 1540 until 1552, Amar Das Ji’s life at Khadur was shaped by service, Gurbani, sangat, and the Guru’s instruction. Later stories remember individual tests, but the strongest pattern is the length and steadiness of his discipleship. He did not treat seva as a transaction to earn a position. For most of those years there was no guarantee that he would become Guru. He served because he had accepted the Guru’s path. When leadership finally came, it rested on habits already formed. The one who would organize the Panth had first learned to obey, work, listen, and place the community above himself.
ਲਗਭਗ 1540 ਤੋਂ 1552 ਤੱਕ, ਖਡੂਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਮਰ ਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੇਵਾ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ, ਸੰਗਤ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਘੜਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਬਾਅਦ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਪਰਖਾਂ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਢੰਗ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੀ ਲੰਬਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਟਿਕਾਓ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਹੁਦਾ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਗਾਰੰਟੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਣਨਗੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਆਈ, ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਆਦਤਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਟਿਕੀ ਸੀ। ਜੋ ਪੰਥ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਗਠਿਤ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੰਨਣਾ, ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ, ਸੁਣਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਸੀ।
लगभग 1540 से 1552 तक, खडूर में अमर दास जी का जीवन सेवा, गुरबाणी, संगत और गुरु के हुक्म से गढ़ा गया। बाद की कहानियाँ व्यक्तिगत परीक्षाएँ याद करती हैं, पर सबसे मज़बूत ढंग उनकी सिखी की लंबाई और टिकाव है। उन्होंने सेवा को पद कमाने का सौदा नहीं समझा। उनमें से अधिकांश सालों के लिए कोई गारंटी नहीं थी कि वे गुरु बनेंगे। उन्होंने इसलिए सेवा की क्योंकि उन्होंने गुरु का रास्ता स्वीकार किया था। जब आख़िर नेतृत्व आया, यह पहले से बनी आदतों पर टिका था। जो पंथ को संगठित करेगा उसने पहले मानना, काम करना, सुनना और समुदाय को अपने से ऊपर रखना सीखा था।
